Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story light-colored house with horizontal siding, two front gables and a small porch, seen from the street across a green lawn with a straight concrete walkway and leafy trees on both sides in low sunlight.

Central AC in Lewis and Clark County is a comfort decision, not a load-driven one. Homes in Lewis and Clark County, MT have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. A compressor that starts only on rare summer afternoons avoids the wear that heavy cycling brings, but it also sits idle long enough that a fault can develop and go undetected until the first day a homeowner actually needs cold air. A contractor quoting the work still has to size the equipment correctly for the house's envelope and duct layout, because an oversized unit that short-cycles on the few days it does run will dehumidify poorly and age the contactor faster than steady operation would.

A basement with exposed wood joists and galvanized metal ductwork overhead, a concrete wall and floor, and a pile of split firewood with scattered sawdust.

Ductwork laid down for one system and then pressed into service for another is what a contractor has to assess before anything else on an installation job here. Half the homes in Lewis and Clark County, Montana were built in 1982 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between what the ducts were designed to carry and what a new unit will actually push through them is where installations run long, change scope, or both. The electrical panel is the same story: a service sized for an older load may not feed a modern condenser without an upgrade. The equipment choice gets settled quickly. What the house already contains takes longer.

The Parts of a Central AC System You Are Buying

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing interior ductwork, an indoor air handler and furniture, connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components that do the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility space, basement, or closet and houses the evaporator coil along with the blower that moves air through the house.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor unit and the air handler, connecting the two halves of the system through the wall or floor. A thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over when the system runs and what temperature it holds.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house based on its construction and existing setup.

Montana’s contractor licence does not reach a casual, minor or inconsequential job whose total price for labour, materials and everything else is less than $2,500 — and the exemption is lost if the work is only part of a larger operation, or if a job is divided up to get under the figure.
