Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Single-story beige house with lap siding, shingled roof, attached two-car garage with a white door, concrete driveway, and a partly dry front lawn under a clear blue sky.

A contractor quoting central AC installation here has to work out what a compressor that almost never runs actually costs a homeowner. Homes in Teton County, MT have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. Equipment that stays off holds moisture, seals dry, and contactors corrode without the cycling that would otherwise keep them seated. When a rare warm stretch arrives, the system starts cold, and that first-start load is where failures concentrate. Sizing the equipment right matters less than specifying components rated for long idle periods and making sure the refrigerant circuit is tight before it goes dormant.

An unfinished basement with exposed wood joists, a galvanized sheet-metal duct running along the ceiling, concrete block and poured walls, and a stack of split firewood on the concrete floor with scattered wood debris.

Ductwork laid out for a furnace and nothing else rarely moves air the way a central AC system needs it to. Half the homes in Teton County, Montana were built in 1962 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a new system has to assess what those ducts can actually carry before the equipment conversation goes anywhere, because undersized or poorly routed runs will limit performance regardless of what unit sits on the pad. That assessment changes the quote, and sometimes the scope of the job entirely.

The Parts of a Central AC System and What Gets Installed

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house interior showing a furnace with ductwork, interior rooms with furniture, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines at the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and it holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside the house, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits in a utility space, basement, or closet, and it is the indoor half of the system. Together these two units are what a central AC installation puts in place.

A refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, connecting them through a small penetration in the wall or rim joist. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over when the system runs and what temperature it holds.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the specifics of your house.

Montana’s contractor licence does not reach a casual, minor or inconsequential job whose total price for labour, materials and everything else is less than $2,500 — and the exemption is lost if the work is only part of a larger operation, or if a job is divided up to get under the figure.
